## South London and Proud

> Born in Greenwich, south London, Eberechi Eze joined Palace in summer 2020 as a landmark signing and has since established himself as a leading attacking talent in the Premier League.

Eberechi Eze signed a five-year contract with Crystal Palace F.C. in August 2020, becoming the club’s second arrival of the summer transfer window.

The south London-born playmaker rose through the ranks at Queens Park Rangers after joining them in 2016. An FA Cup debut followed in January 2017 and later that year, Eze made 22 appearances in a half-season loan to Wycombe Wanderers.

Then still a teenager, the attack-minded youngster played a key role in the Chairboys’ promotion to League One that season, scoring five goals - including a brace against Cambridge United.

On his return to QPR, Eze established himself as a regular first-team player, being awarded the No.10 shirt and a three-year contract in 2018. He left the Hoops with 20 goals from 112 senior games, collecting Supporters’ Player of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season and Junior Hoops Player of the Season for 19/20 as well as being shortlisted for PFA Player of the Year.

Internationally, Eze has represented England at both Under-20 and Under-21 level, and was named in the U21 squad the same week he signed for Palace.

He made his Palace debut as an 81st-minute substitute against Southampton in September 2020, and scored his first goal for the Eagles shortly after, netting a Goal of the Month free-kick versus Leeds United.

Another sensational strike – this time against Sheffield United – earned Eze the club's Goal of the Season award for 2020/21. He finished the 20/21 campaign with six goals and four assists in 35 games.

The midfielder received a call from the England first-team, after his performances in 20/21, but was desperately unfortunate to suffer an Achillies injury two matches before the end of the season, keeping him sidelined for over six months.

Injury meant that the majority of 2021/22 was spent in recovery for Eze, but he returned in the latter part of campaign and scored his only goal of 21/22 in a 2-1 win away at Southampton – a well-taken finish.

The following season was Eze's finest in a Palace shirt to date, the playmaker establishing himself as a leading offensive talent in the Premier League.

The No. 10 featured in all 38 of the Eagles' Premier League games in 2022/23, coming into his own after the World Cup break, finishing the season with 10 goals – Palace's top scorer – and four assists to his name. He was at his mesmeric best during April 2023, scoring four times in Palace’s six games and earning a Premier League Player of the Month nomination.

In June, Eze became the 18th Crystal Palace player to represent England, coming on after 70 minutes of a 4-0 win over Malta – and even having an effort cleared off the line.

He made his 100th Premier League appearance for the club against Fulham in September 2023 and signed a new three-and-a-half year deal in November, extending his stay in SE25 until 2027.

His 2023/24 season was intermittently broken up due to injury, however he still managed to produce his best ever season in terms of attacking returns with 11 goals and four assists in 27 Premier League games. Eze also won the Goal of the Season award, as voted for by the fans, with his winner at Anfield in April 2024.

Eze's fine form towards the end of 23/24 saw him called up to the England squad ahead of the 2024 UEFA European Championship. He was also rewarded with his first start for the Three Lions in a 3-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in early June.

He made an impact off the bench on three occasions for England, helping the side to the final they finished runners-up in the 2024 UEFA European Championship.

**Today, we hear from former Palace captain Geoff Thomas – the man who led the Eagles out at Wembley for our first-ever FA Cup final, which took place [on this day 35 years ago](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/club/on-this-day-1990-fa-cup-final/)…**

“It was like going into *Gladiators*, really – it felt that way with the walk..."

Although we're speaking over the phone, you can hear, from the intonation of his voice, the twinkle in **Geoff Thomas**’ eye – the memory of leading Crystal Palace out for their first-ever FA Cup Final burns brightly.

“I think as a player, that’s when you realise you're a part of history,” he continues, describing the feeling of the long walk from the old Wembley dressing room, along the concrete paved tunnel floor – matchball and furled-up pennant in hand.

Steve Coppell strides ahead of Thomas; Nigel Martyn walks behind, also with matchball in hand. The trio walk out to a fever pitch of noise and anticipation alongside Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and skipper Bryan Robson.

Thomas attempts a few basketball-style spins with the ball on the end of his finger, walking with confidence – no nerves on show.

Crystal Palace very much entered the 1990 FA Cup Final as underdogs – but they knew they deserved to be there, the biggest stage in English football.

“The stadium was absolutely different when we were walking out from behind the goal,” Thomas recalls. “It’s a place which holds so many different memories: England winning in 1966, and all the players who have played on that pitch… 

"You know, at that point, you’ve got a chance of being a name that's going to be associated with a fantastic game or a fantastic goal.

“That's what you've got to look forward to. You can have a chance to do something amazing. That's what the Final is about.

“It's one of the biggest showcase, TV-covered games in the world. That’s why I’d say to the players: just enjoy it. It's a magical occasion which you're just blessed to be a part of.”

Magical indeed – watch back the opening scenes of that Final day, and you’ll hear BBC Sport commentator John Motson declare it “*the finest day in Crystal Palace history*” before the match had even kicked off.

Just nine years earlier, Thomas had been working as an apprentice electrician preparing to take a gamble with fourth-tier Rochdale.

Six years later, he was recruited by a cash-trapped Palace and – under the astute guidance of Coppell – became a fulcrum of the side which granted Eagles supporters some of their headiest days: promotion to the top tier in 1989; a run to the 1990 Final, our first-ever major such occasion; and, the following year, [our ZDS Cup Final triumph on the same ground](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/features/steve-coppell-reflects-crystal-palace-1990-91-full-members-cup-season-and-european-fallout/), underneath the famous Wembley twin towers.

But in so many ways, as captain, it was Thomas’ journey which typified Palace’s own at the time: rapid progress, built upon hard work to maximise natural ability, and upon resilience to come through any challenges encountered along the way.

Reminiscent of Oliver Glasner’s current crop of 2024/25, we ask Thomas?: “I think this team… it stays together. I can see this side being just as good.

“It's a fantastic occasion. I'm so keen for this squad to actually go one step further and just get that first piece of major silverware. It would be fantastic for everybody involved.

“You can see the connection between the players as well – it's a real togetherness. You don't see that often.

"It's a special time for these players. I look back on my career, and it's not often you get that real connection between everybody. You can see everybody working 100% for each other with this squad. And the enjoyment that they're getting from it as well…

“Ebs \[Eze\] is such a class player – but he's playing with a smile on his face. He's enjoying doing what he's doing. \[JP\] Mateta up front, his form has been fantastic… it looks like they're really enjoying it all, playing free of any nerves.

“That's the way a good team is built: by having a good squad who really enjoy what they're doing. That's credit to the manager, Oliver \[Glasner\], and the coaching staff. We’ve got a depth in the squad now that hopefully will improve as the next couple of seasons go forward.”

A fellow midfielder also catches the eye: “Adam in midfield is at such a young age, and he has got such a good head on him – his future's going to be massive.

“If we can keep hold of him and keep players like the international players around him for at least two, three years, then I think Palace will grow.”

Underpinning the talent which Thomas speaks of in this squad is its connection with our supporters.

It's something the former midfielder, having won Supporters’ Player of the Season in his first campaign with the club after arriving in 1987, would appreciate more than most.

“Palace have been great to me since day one,” Thomas recalls. “I mean, as soon as I arrived at Palace, it felt like my club, and that's continued. The support I've received after football has been amazing.

“I know Steve Parish really well and Mark Bright is still heavily involved with the club, so I'm always keeping a close eye on the club! It's been great to watch them get to Wembley again, and hopefully this time they can make history and lift the trophy.

“I think everybody enjoys playing for Crystal Palace. I’ve spoken to players who just love the atmosphere down there – and I think the Final will be an occasion where the fans, like with the semi-final, should just enjoy it. 

"The noise that they create is amazing, so they should just carry on doing what they’re doing. I've been down to Selhurst a number of times and even on occasions the game’s been dull – and there have been a few over the years – the fans just keep behind them.

“That’s not stopped for many, many a year.”

It’s a big ask – a big challenge – but everybody’s up for it!

Nor should it. Over three decades since his last appearance in a Palace shirt, Thomas remains an iconic figure in South London – both for what he achieved on the pitch, but also off it.

In 2022, Thomas received an MBE for his charitable work in raising millions for Cure Leukaemia, following his own diagnosis with blood cancer in 2003 – a year after retiring from the game.

Thomas was given just three months to live at the time but – after a stem cell transplant from his sister Kay, and treatment from Professor Charlie Craddock CBE, the co-founder of blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia – Geoff entered remission from the disease in January 2005. He went on to set up the Geoff Thomas Foundation.

“Ever since then I've been working with Charlie Craddock  – the guy who saved my life – and I've been cycling to raise money," Thomas explains.

"This year, again, we'll be doing London to Paris, and then the big one, which is 21 days on a bike, going up the Alps and the Pyrenees – more or less mirroring what the professionals do, but a little slower!

“Just a week before the pros, we’ve got about 20 riders taking part in it, and we're hoping to raise a million pounds. It’s a big ask – a big challenge – but everybody’s up for it!”

Before then, Thomas will be in attendance at Wembley to witness Palace’s own mountain to conquer: an FA Cup Final against his boyhood club Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

He reflects: “If you would have asked me a couple of seasons ago, I would have said it's going to be tough, really tough. Everybody knows Man City are just not playing their best at the moment – but they've also hit a little bit of form again.

“If you go back to the Etihad, not too long ago \[for Palace’s 5-2 defeat last month\], in the first-half, Palace were so dominant. It just shows that they're vulnerable, Man City, at the moment. Their defence isn't anywhere near as solid as it used to be.

“I think we've got a great opportunity of doing really, really well. I just hope it's a great game – I think it will be. I don't think anybody's going to sit back. I think with the quality of City's forward line in midfield and Crystal Palace's as well, I think it will be backwards and forwards – and may the best team win.

“I'm a Manchester lad and I was brought up as a Man City fan. We weren't allowed to look at the red side of Manchester! 

"But I'm totally behind Crystal Palace. I'm just desperate for Crystal Palace and everybody associated with the club to enjoy something special: lifting the FA Cup.”

### Wembley ready

Momentum was the order of the day in Palace’s last Premier League match before their FA Cup Final at Wembley.

A performance of style and attacking verve certainly generated just that: Palace recorded 23 shots (10 on target); accrued an xG total of 3.83 (to the hosts’ 0.80); and put the ball in the net four times (with two disallowed efforts); proving wholly dominant in North London. The perfect preparation.

### History made

Not only was Sunday’s win our first away at Tottenham since November 1997, and our first-ever at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – the Eagles had lost on all seven of our previous visits, scoring just twice in that time – but it also saw us write more statistical history for the club.

Indeed, in what is the 25th different season in which we’ve met Tottenham in league competition, this was our first-ever double over the North Londoners.

What’s more, the win meant that Palace have now won both home and away against every Premier League side to have established their place in the top league since our return in 2013.

### Record almost achieved

Sunday’s three points took Palace onto 49 for the season – with two matches yet to play.

Breaking the 50-point barrier would be another historic achievement for the club, as 49 represents our joint-best, achieved previously on three occasions: 2023/24 (last season), 2018/19 and 1992/93 (the latter being a 42-game season in which Palace were relegated).

History would beckon with at least a draw against either Wolverhampton Wanderers (at home) or Liverpool (away).

And, yes, if you were counting – that result does assure of at least a 12th-placed finish, while the possibility is still there for the Eagles to finish as high as eighth after their two remaining matches.

### E-berilliant Eze

Tenuous nomenclature puns aside, the England international’s brace also saw him score for three consecutive league games for the first time in his career, and record his 10th goal involvement (seven goals, three assists) in his last 10 appearances in all competitions – which have all fallen following his first goal for England back in March.

On his own personal form, he said: “It’s been a weird season, but \[I\] gradually got there. \[I’m\] gradually getting some rhythm and playing how I want to be playing, helping the team as much as I can. It's a good time right now.”

Manager Oliver Glasner said it all in his post-match interview: “I really hope that all our fans had sun protection today, because they were the whole time in the sun, and it was really warm in the sun!

“It’s our fans, we can always count on them. I think they can count on the team that they always have 100 per cent effort. Great connection, great game for them, and I think everybody who is close to Crystal Palace is now looking forward to Wembley.”

Starting with **Owen Goodman** and AFC Wimbledon, the shot-stopper put in a sensational Man of the Match performance against Notts County in the first leg of their play-off semi-final.

The Dons traveled to Meadow Lane with the aim of pushing for the play-off final and securing promotion back to League One after three seasons in the fourth tier.

The Magpies enjoyed more of the ball in the game and created more chances on goal, however it was Wimbledon who managed to take, and hold on to, the lead when Nottingham-born Riley Harbottle headed the visitors ahead on the hour-mark.

This proved to be the only goal of the game, with defensive heroics and five crucial saves from Goodman giving Wimbledon a slender lead to take back to Plough Lane on Saturday.

Goodman was crowned the Sky Bet Player of the Match for his standout performance and for his 23rd clean sheet of the campaign. He also won the League Two Golden Glove award earlier this week.

Elsewhere in the play-offs **Rob Holding** and Sheffield United travelled to Ashton Gate for their play-off semi-final against Bristol City. 

It couldn’t have gone any better for the Blades, as they ran away 3-0 winners in a dominant display. Holding came on for the last 10 minutes of the game, after the third goal, to shore up the defence and maintain the clean sheet.

**Jesurun Rak-Sakyi** unfortunately did not feature in this game. The winger has missed the last three games for the Blades, but may potentially be available for the second-leg. 

Across the Irish Sea, **Seán Grehan** and Bohemian continued their remarkable run of last-gasp winners. The centre-back [has got two in recent weeks](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/club/loan-report-tayo-adaramola-bradford-promoted-joe-whitworth-danny-imray-player-of-the-season/), while on Saturday they managed to get another 88th minute winner away at Silgo Rovers.

Victory for Bohs makes it four wins in their last five games, of which Grehan has played every minute. They are now two points off top spot in the League of Ireland Premier Division, four points off top spot.
